The simple answer to this is YES in truth it is HELL YES. Are you not ashamed? If I was to be critical then my answer would be YES to this question. Why am I ashamed ? I am shamed that I waited so long to take up the offer that is why I felt ashamed not that I took up the offer for Counselling.
I had Counselling long before I ever became a Counsellor, Yet I wholeheartedly believe it was what compelled me to become a Therapist in order that the help given to me I could pass on to others.
As Counsellors it is Vital that we also undertake Counselling as part of our Professional development. Take a second to think of the kind of stories I hear from Clients day in and day out and how that could impact on my own Mental Health and well being. Not only that but how it may transfer or alter my conduct, behaviour, attitude, empathy, or outlook as a Therapist.
The form of Counselling I have is more discussion based with a mentor of equal or higher standing that covers all the above to ensure no unconscious bias has crept in and that I assess each client on their own merit and that no bad habits like pre judgements have navigate their way in to my thinking or how I approach the Counselling role.
This Mentorship is something all Great Counsellors and Therapists undertake to ensure we give our clients the best service and outcomes possible and where any concerns are identified they are discussed and rectified in these sessions.
At the end of the day being able to have a safe place as a Counsellor to discuss work load and cases (not individuals) means new ideas can be adopted alongside keeping the Counsellor fresh to give 100% focus to the people who visit them to ensure only the very best care is offered to each individual client.
